The exhibition ‘Ravens Flew Both Ways’ is an exhibition of artworks by Finnish artist Uura Niemi-Junkola and Yorkshire Dales-born artist Kath Horner. 

The exhibition draws on the themes of Nordic landscape, identity, memory and association and is inspired by the parallels and differences between the ancient terrains of Finland and Northern England.  

Together, Uura Niemi-Junkola and Kath Horners paintings create a compelling conversation of the two artists’ perspectives, united by a shared appreciation of Northern land, elements and stories they hold.  The exhibition offers the visitors an opportunity to consider the cultural threads that link these regions. It is a thoughtful exploration of belonging, enduring bonds between land, seasons, heritage and identity.  

Uura Niemi-Junkola is an intuitive artist whose practice encompasses watercolour, acrylic, charcoal and mixed media. In this exhibition her semi-abstract works explore the emotional and physical experience of wild Nordic seasons and landscapes. Inspired by her childhood in Finland, she attempts to capture the emotional and spiritual resonance of northern environments by creating a visual experience for the viewer.

 The key characteristic of her work is the interaction of colour, form and flow.  

Through expressive visual storytelling Kath Horner’s work invites a reflection on shared heritage and enduring relationships between people and natural world. Her artistic approach is rooted in observation, intuition and fascination with traces left by generations living on land. By weaving together elements of history, folklore and lived experience, she seeks to reveal universal narratives that connect distant communities.
