The Art House: Simple Steps Towards Wellbeing

The Art House: Simple Steps Towards Wellbeing

The Art House isn’t just a venue that provides ceramic and art courses; we strive to be a creative space in the heart of Sheffield where people can find the support and resources they need to look after their own wellbeing.

Wellbeing is a word that seems to crop up more and, but what does it actually mean in the twenty first century and what can you do to make your own emotional and physical health a priority?

There isn’t just one definition of what wellbeing is, but The World Health Organisation defines it as;

“Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.”

Research has shown that even a small improvement in a person’s wellbeing has been found to decrease some mental health problems and help an individual flourish so, knowing what steps you can take to help yourself is seen as important by more and more think tanks and governments.

The British Government enlisted the New Economics Foundation to look at this and the result was a framework of 5 simple steps that everyone can take to help safeguard their own wellbeing. They were:

1) Socialisation: Reaching out to others and socialising helps with cognitive engagement and is beneficial to overall brain health.

2) Be active: The evidence is overwhelming that there is a link between mental health and physical activity. It doesn’t have to be hours in the gym – just getting out and taking a walk counts.

3) Take notice: Being aware of your surrounding and constantly questioning the world around you stimulates the brain and that helps you feel good.

4) Keep learning: Ongoing learning gives people a sense of achievement and fulfilment which in turn helps to maintain a higher level of personal wellbeing.

5) Give: Acts of empathy and kindness help us to feel fulfilled and energised. Research shows that altruism reduces feelings of isolation and helps to reduce negative feelings.

All of these ideas underpin the ethos of The Art House. We aim to be a space where you can connect with others, explore creative ideas and learn new skills in a non-judgemental environment. The work you create and the connections you make give back to city and sustain Sheffield as an exciting, creative place to live. (Also a simple scheme like our café’s ‘Pending Coffee’ is also an opportunity to give something back to the community and to feel good about helping others.)

We have an informative collection of leaflets to direct you to other like-minded organisations and our staff are always available to offer advice.

If you share our aims (and believe in the importance of everyone’s wellbeing) please like us on social media and help to share our aims with others. You can also support us by using our venue and our café.
