THE JOY OF SKETCHING with Tim Bye
Join Tim on this Saturday workshop to spend the day doodling and scribbling your own fun designs. Explore how you like to make marks and develop your “visual voice” in a group atmosphere.

Please bring a few pictures to inspire you: friends / family / people / animals / pets   – anything that makes you want to draw!

Pencils and paper are provided, though feel free to bring any extra materials along (Tim sometimes likes to draw with a ballpoint pen!)

SKETCHBOOK WEEKEND with Colette Cameron

Including outdoor sketching in Weston Park

Two whole days learning the art of keeping a sketchbook! Saturday activities are based at The Art House and include exploring materials, approaches, and preparation. Sunday will be based in the Western Park with inspiring activities to help you respond to the environment around you.

The focus is on creating lively, expressive sketches on a range of subject matter including trees, historic buildings and people so that you get the most from your sketchbook.

Sketchbook included. Suitable for beginners and the more advanced. This is an all-weather course, with shelter available in the event of poor conditions. Please dress appropriately.

PAINTING BOTANICALS with Flora Menager

Participants will learn painting techniques specifically suited to painting flowers in watercolour.

This class is suitable for both beginners and students who have previously taken Flora’s watercolour courses and/or are looking to try new techniques.  We will be painting from beautiful inspiration images but feel free to bring in your on own on the day!

Learn how to use sheets of real gold leaf within your painting to create shimmering magical effects.

When we bring gold to the table we can make something magnificent!

SIP AND PRINT: VEGETABLES with Mia James 
In this workshop you will be taught how to block print onto fabric using permanent textile inks. Handmade blocks will include a range of fruit and vegetables to print onto either a drawstring or tote bag which can be used as a reusable shopping bag. All materials and a bag will be provided but please bring additional fabric if you wish to create more prints for your home or business.

Suitable for all abilities (even complete beginners!). Bring your own drinks, we’ll provide the glasses! (18+)

INDIGO TYE DYEING with Dee Sayce 

Learn to tie and dye fabric with a natural plant based indigo blue dye. We will make tie dyed fabric samples with interesting patterns in the fabric with a range of techniques including stitching, folding and tying with threads, rubber bands, and clips. Indigo dye is light fast and wash fast, which is why it has historically been very popular. Take home your samples to use in craft projects.

This course is suitable for beginners.  All materials and equipment are provided.  Maximum group size – 10

12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS FABRIC PRINTING with Mia James

Create permanent textile prints inspired by the birds from the traditional carol ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’.  Birds will include a partridge, turtle doves, hens, pheasants and geese.  Designs could be used to create your own Christmas cards, gift bags or table linen.  Fabric prints are also great for further embellishment at home, for example embroidery or applique to create unique gifts.  Materials are provided and will include a few card blanks each, one cotton bag and fabric pieces.  If you have project ideas you may wish to bring your own fabric (must be light coloured) to the workshop.

BAND WEAVING with Dee Sayce

Learn how to make strong, decorative woven bands, using an inkle loom. Band weaving is a traditional method of weaving to make long woven bands for belts, bag straps and edging etc.

In this workshop you will learn the basics of band weaving, make woven samples using a variety of patterns, techniques, colours and yarn. This workshop aims to give you the confidence and skills needed to set up and weave on an inkle loom independently at home.

This workshop is suitable for beginners.  All materials and equipment provided.

MOSAIC MANDALA with Diana Storey

This is a relaxed, therapeutic class where you can create a beautiful Mandala mosaic of your own design, using a wide range of materials including tiles, glass, mirror, ceramics and jewellery.  You are welcome to bring some of you own bits and pieces if you’d like to incorporate them into your Mandala.

You will learn to cut the pieces, arrange and install them and grout, so your piece will be complete and ready to take home.

SOFT CUT LINO PRINTING with Sam Groom 
On this lino cut printing workshop you will learn how to transfer your design onto ‘soft-cut’ lino, cut out your design and print using a selection of colourful inks onto paper of various kinds using a small table-top printing press. At the end of the session you will have a range of your own unique prints ready to be framed and hung on your wall or to make into cards.

DEVELOP YOUR ILLUSTRATIVE IDEAS with Carl Flint

Do you have an idea for an illustrated children’s book or an illustrated cartoon series but can’t quite seem to get it moving? Join local illustrator Carl Flint for a one-day crash course in illustrating your own story.  A chance to concentrate on developing your own ideas away from the distractions of home and work in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. The day will be loosely structured but you will be encouraged to bring your own ideas to the table. Please bring any notes, sketches or artwork you have have already created.

COILED BASKETRY with Dee Sayce 

The ancient craft of coiled basketry can utilise a variety of materials including yarn, fabric, rushes and raffia. Coiled baskets start with a spiral shape and then worked into the required shape as it develops.
In this workshop you will learn how to make a small basket or mat using your own choice of materials.

ABSTRACT ACRYLICS with Flora Menager

Is abstract painting an abstract concept that you’ve always wanted to learn but didn’t know where to begin? This workshop will teach you how.  As a starting point we will work from life then progress to working from imagination based on a concept and inspiration images.

AN INTRODUCTION TO SPINNING with Dee Sayce 

Learn to spin sheep fleece and other fibres to create unique, colourful and textured yarns that can then be used in your own knitting, crochet or craft projects.
In this workshop you will learn the basics of this ancient craft, including how to:
– spin using both a drop spindle and a spinning wheel
– sort a fleece
– card fleece into rolags ready for spinning

This workshop is suitable for beginners.

All materials and equipment are provided

Payments: All courses or workshops must be fully paid in advance and all major cheques, cash and credit/debit cards are acceptable methods of payment. To pay by cheque please click here to download a booking form and send back with a cheque made payable to “St Matthews House Ltd”.  You can also drop in Monday – Friday from 11am – 3pm to pay in person.

If you have an Art House gift voucher please follow the instructions below:
• Pay the full price of the course online.
• Email us prior to the course date to tell us you have used a voucher.
• Bring the voucher with you on the day to receive your cash back.

Cancellation and refunds: If you wish to cancel your place on a course you must do so at least 14 days before the course starts in order to receive a full refund. Cancellation must be made in writing or email. If you require a refund we will charge £15 administrative fee. Alternatively you may transfer your booking to another course free of charge.

If you cancel your place less than 14 days before your course starts, you will only receive a refund of 50% course fee (or 50% of the fee value to transfer to an alternative course).  If you require a refund we will charge £15 administrative fee or you can transfer your booking to another course free of charge.

After a course begins we do not offer any refund unless in exceptional circumstances. 

If we have to cancel a course for any reason, then you will receive a full refund with no administrative fee deducted.
