In August and September, the Art House will be open for booked classes only, we hope to open to the general public from September (keep your fingers crossed and your eyes on our social media!)

SKETCH & THE CITY: Outdoor Class
With Colette Cameron

Discover how to create lively, expressive sketches during this outdoor session. Capture moments in time; people, buildings, trees and park life
We will be based in Weston Park which has outside shelters ideal for sketching whatever the weather.

Colette will email you instructions the day before your class.  By booking you are giving the Art House permission to share your contact details with the tutor.

One of our past participants said… ‘Thank you Colette for an absolutely lovely class. The pace was perfect. I learnt so much in two hours! It was so good to see my mother relax and we were were laughing together which was probably the first time since the beginning of lock down’

MOSAIC HOUSE NUMBERS ON SLATE with Diana Storey

Using a wide range of materials including tiles, glass, mirror, ceramics and jewellery you will create your own house number plaque on a slate base.   You are welcome to bring some of you own bits and pieces if you’d like to incorporate them into your piece.

Along the way you will learn the techniques needed for mosaicing, including learning how to use glass cutters and tile nippers and the art of grouting. We will design and make the piece in the morning and grout in the afternoon so you can take your finished house number.

MOSAIC MANDALA with Diana Storey

This is a relaxed, therapeutic class where you can create a beautiful Mandala mosaic of your own design,using a wide range of materials including tiles, glass, mirror, ceramics and jewellery.  You are welcome to bring some of you own bits and pieces if you’d like to incorporate them into your Mandala.

You will learn to cut the pieces, arrange and install them and grout, so your piece will be complete and ready to take home.

TAPESTRY WEAVING with Dee Sayce

Design and create your own woven tapestry sampler, wall hanging or small purse/bag in this workshop, using the traditional craft of weft-faced weaving.

Learn the basics of tapestry weaving including how to warp up a tapestry frame/loom, design and produce a woven item using a using a variety of tapestry weaving techniques and stitches and using your own choice of colourful and textured yarn.

This workshop is set up to give you enough knowledge, skills and confidence to be able to tapestry weave independently. If you have any tapestry weaving equipment and/or yarns to weave with, please bring them.

This workshop is suitable for beginners, materials and equipment are provided.

WINTER HARES & FOXES with Anna Massey

Create a beautiful oil pastel art work of a winter hare or fox. On this one day workshop you will learn how to use oil pastels to create blended and textural effects ideal for depicting fur and snowy scenes. You will also learn how to create layers with brushes and bending tools giving depth and atmosphere to your work.

You will have a choice of wintery photos to work from with either a hare or fox on this enjoyable seasonal workshop. Suitable for beginners and improvers

INTRODUCTION TO SOFT CUT LINO with Sam Groom

On this workshop for complete beginners you will learn how to transfer and cut out your design into soft cut lino. You will then learn how to mix up colourful inks and use a table top press to produce a series on unique and colourful lino cut prints onto paper to take home and frame.

Items to bring. Any visual resources you would like to use as inspiration. This could be drawings, photographs or other images, fabric or wallpaper.

ILLUSTRATE YOUR OWN STORY with Carl Flint
Aspiring illustrators alert!

Do you have an idea for an illustrated children’s story but are having trouble getting started? Is that blank white page causing you hold ups? Perhaps you’ve already started on the artwork but need a few pointers to keep you moving in the right direction?

Join our mutually supportive group for another session to develop your illustrative ideas.

Please bring along any notes and sketches you have already produced.
Students are encouraged to work in their own style and at their own pace.

The session is hosted by Sheffield-based illustrator Carl Flint who has illustrated a number of books for adults and children.
Basic materials are provided by the Art House but you may prefer to bring your own equipment.

AUTUMN LEAVES BLOCK PRINTING WORKSHOP with Mia James
Autumn Leaves – Block printmaking onto fabric using permanent textile inks. We will use handmade printing blocks to create designs on fabric inspired by the colours of autumn woodland.  To get used to the technique and experiment with colour mixing we will start by using a single leaf block each and gradually change the colours. Working with our autumn colour scheme participants can then choose from wildlife / woodland themed blocks and print foxes, pheasants, owls or further leaf and tree designs.

AUTUMN EVENING SKIES with Mia James
Using handmade blocks of silhouette trees, birds and bats we will focus on creating atmospheric designs on a range of fabrics including sheer fabric. At this workshop we will use a monochromatic colour scheme with the emphasis being on texture, layering and layout. We will paint skies and textures for overprinting, print small silhouette birds and bat and tree trunk designs.

HALLOWEEN BIRDS with Diana Storey

Every month Diana will be joining us at the Art House to share her her skills and love of mosaicing with participants.  Diana is a mosaic artist with 20 years of mosaic experience.

Using an abundant variety of materials including ceramics, glass and jewellery you can create a beautifully spooky halloween bird.

In this One day workshop you will learn how to cut, arrange and then grout the piece using tile nippers and glass cutters.
All materials included.

Young people over the age of 15 are welcome to book a place with a participating adult (please let us know on booking)

DAY OF THE DEAD FABRIC PRINTING with Mia JamesBlock printmaking onto fabric using permanent textile inks. Celebrate the colours and designs from the Mexican Día de Muertos festival and block print skulls and then decorate with either small flower prints or add artificial flowers and fabrics to create vibrant colourful artwork. Blocks include a couple of Frida Kahlo motifs. Materials are provided but you may want to bring additional fabric items to print onto (fabric must be pale colours)

FABRIC PRINTING VEGETABLE BAGS with Mia James

In this workshop you will be taught how to block print onto fabric using permanent textile inks. Handmade blocks will include a range of vegetables to print onto either a drawstring or tote bag which can be used as a reusable shopping bag. Emphasis will be on colour and layering designs to create artwork inspired by the rich colours of gardens / allotments. All materials and a bag will be provided but please bring additional fabric if you wish to create more prints for your home or business.

INDIGO TYE DYEING with Dee Sayce

Learn to make up an indigo dye vat and produce a rich blue colour, using this fascinating dyeing process to dye textiles. Use traditional techniques to create beautiful patterns on natural fibre fabric using rubber bands, clips, stitching and tying techniques. Design and create your own tie dyed muslin scarf, tote bag or fabric for a future project.
All materials and equipment are supplied. You also have the option to bring and dye your own cotton t-shirt or similar size garment, or some natural fabric or yarn.

Please wear clothes you don’t mind getting messy in, or bring an apron. This workshop is suitable for beginners.

Mosaic Workshop: Blackbirds with Diana Storey

Every month Diana will be joining us at the Art House to share her her skills and love of mosaicing with participants.  Diana is a mosaic artist with 20 years of mosaic experience.

Relax and enjoy the Art of Mosaic in a safe, informal, supportive environment .
Using an abundant variety of materials including ceramics, glass and jewellery you can create a beautiful blackbird that you can fly home with.

CHRISTMAS CARDS & WRAPPING PAPER PRINTING with Sam Groom
 
Have fun on this workshop hand printing festive cards and wrapping paper from your own simply made lino blocks and stamps. Printing onto either 6 white or Kraft cards and up to 1 metre of brown parcel wrapping paper, your design can be on any theme you like, be it a festive theme or some other subject that inspires you. Choose from a range of colourful and metallic inks to create something really original and unique.

INKLE WEAVING with Dee Sayce

Inkle weaving is a traditional method of creating long, strong, decorative woven bands for belts, bag straps, edging etc. Learn how to warp up a loom and read pattern charts. Create woven samples on an inkle loom and a backstrap loom using a variety of decorative patterns, techniques, colours and yarn. You can take home most of the bookmark size samples you make.

This workshop intends to give you the confidence and skills needed to inkle weave independently at home. All materials and equipment will be provided. If you have an inkle loom you are welcome to bring it with you.

This workshop is suitable for beginners.

12 BIRDS OF CHRISTMAS with Mia James

Block printmaking onto fabric using permanent textile inks. At this workshop we will create designs using handmade printing blocks inspired by the birds from the song Twelve Days of Christmas. Materials are provided but you can bring additional fabric items (must be pale coloured) if you wish to create items such as tablecloths, aprons, napkins, cards for celebrating Christmas or as gifts.

PRINT YOUR OWN NAPKINS AND TABLE RUNNER with Sam Groom

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners or those with some experience. You will learn how to carve a design of your choice into an ‘easy carve’ rubber block and also how to print with professional fabric printing inks to create your own printed textile a design onto napkins and a table runner. Please provide your own cotton or linen napkins and table runner, or linen napkins and table runners can be purchased on the day for an additional cost.

An additional charge of £5 per person is charged on the day to cover the cost of all the materials ( except any napkins, runners purchased from me) used in the workshop.

SPINNING with Dee Sayce
Learn to spin sheep fleece and other fibres to create unique, colourful and textured yarns that can then be used in your own knitting, crochet or craft projects.

In this workshop you will learn the basics of this ancient craft, including how to:
spin using both a drop spindle and a spinning wheel
– sort a fleece
– card fleece into rolags ready for spinning

This workshop is suitable for beginners. All materials and equipment are provided

SCREEN PRINTING WITH EMBROIDERY HOOPS with Sam Groom

On this fun workshop you will learn how to screen print using your own homemade embroidery hoop silkscreen. I will teach you two different screen printing techniques – screen-printing using a screen block and screen printing using stencils – to produce a range of simple one-colour prints onto a tea-towel and tote bag.

At the end of the workshop you will have a fabulous range of colourful screen printed designs onto your tea-towel and bag as well as some sample fabric swatches to use in sewing projects or to generate ideas for future printing.

Fabric items will be available to purchase on the workshop as well as the equipment used to create the silkscreen so you can take your screen home and carry on printing!

Items to bring.

Any visual resources you would like to use as inspiration. This could be drawings, photographs or other images, fabric or wallpaper.

Please note there is an additional cost of £8 to cover the cost of materials used on the workshop.

Payments: All courses or workshops must be fully paid in advance and all major cheques, cash and credit/debit cards are acceptable methods of payment. To pay by cheque please click here to download a booking form and send back with a cheque made payable to “St Matthews House Ltd”.  You can also drop in Monday – Friday from 11am – 3pm to pay in person.

If you have an Art House gift voucher please follow the instructions below:
• Pay the full price of the course online.
• Email us prior to the course date to tell us you have used a voucher.
• Bring the voucher with you on the day to receive your cash back.

Cancellation and refunds: If you wish to cancel your place on a course you must do so at least 14 days before the course starts in order to receive a full refund. Cancellation must be made in writing or email. If you require a refund we will charge £15 administrative fee. Alternatively you may transfer your booking to another course free of charge.

If you cancel your place less than 14 days before your course starts, you will only receive a refund of 50% course fee (or 50% of the fee value to transfer to an alternative course).  If you require a refund we will charge £15 administrative fee or you can transfer your booking to another course free of charge.

After a course begins we do not offer any refund unless in exceptional circumstances. 

If we have to cancel a course for any reason, then you will receive a full refund with no administrative fee deducted.
