FABRIC PRINTMAKING – INSPIRED BY RUSKIN AND NATURAL HISTORY COLLECTIONS ~ with Mia James
Using Ruskin’s peacock down feather painting as our initial inspiration we will experiment with a range of techniques for creating prints, concentrating on the colour and texture of feathers and birds.

We will print using feathers, polystyrene tiles, textured papers and handmade printing blocks. Prints will be on fabric using permanent textile inks. Materials are provided but you may wish to bring additional fabrics (must be light coloured) if you have specific project work in mind for continuing after the session.

EXPRESSIVE WATERCOLOURS with Colette Cameron

Discover how watercolours can capture the beauty and energy of life to create images that contain a freer and more lyrical form of expression.
We will take inspiration from traditional Chinese painting to develop simple, lively strokes.

FABRIC PRINTING: THE MOTHS AND THE BEES with Mia James

At this fabric printmaking workshop we will create designs using handmade blocks in a range of moth and bee motifs.  With your bee prints you can create repeat patterns or single images cut out and made into decorations or used for making lavender bags or cards.

With the moth printing blocks emphasis will be on colour and texture and additional fabric scraps can be added to the wings.  A few beetles and fly printing blocks will also be available.  Materials provided but you may wish to bring light coloured fabric if you have particular project work in mind.

OIL PAINTING: STILL LIFE with Marcin Szuba

You will learn the fundamentals of handling paint and composition and you will observe tonal values and colour relationships. You will explore different surfaces, lines, patterns and space.

A still life will be set up in the space for you to work from and this session will be taught largely on one to one basis to help you build confidence.

Suitable for all skill levels, from beginners to those with more experience.  All materials are provided.

COILED BASKETRY with Dee Sayce
Coiled basketry is the traditional craft of making containers and mats with a variety of materials.  A coiled basket is made starting with a spiral shape which is then worked into the desired shape as it develops, using a binding thread around a core material.

 

In this workshop, suitable for beginners, you will learn how to make a small basket or mat, using your own choice of colours and materials, incl. cord, yarn, fabric, rushes, raffia etc.  Learn how to:

  • make a small basket or mat
  • use different techniques
  • make patterns
  • use a variety of materials
  • experiment with colour
  • make samples

If you have been too scared to use oil paints before, this is the class for you!  Marcin will be showing you first steps in to the world of oil painting from a still life set up, with plenty of one to one attention.

MOSAIC MANDALA with Diana Storey

This is a relaxed, therapeutic class where you can create a beautiful Mandala mosaic of your own design, using a wide range of materials including tiles, glass, mirror, ceramics and jewellery.  You are welcome to bring some of you own bits and pieces if you’d like to incorporate them into your Mandala.

You will learn to cut the pieces, arrange and install them and grout, so your piece will be complete and ready to take home.

INTRODUCTION TO SPINNING with Dee Sayce

Learn to spin sheep fleece and other fibres to create unique, colourful and textured yarns that can then be used in your own knitting, crochet or craft projects.
In this workshop you will learn the basics of this ancient craft, including how to:
– spin using both a drop spindle and a spinning wheel
– sort a fleece
– card fleece into rolags ready for spinning

This workshop is suitable for beginners.

MOSAICS: HOUSE NUMBERS ON SLATE with Diana Storey

Using a wide range of materials including tiles, glass, mirror, ceramics and jewellery you will create your own house number plaque on a slate base.   You are welcome to bring some of you own bits and pieces if you’d like to incorporate them into your piece.

Along the way you will learn the techniques needed for mosaicking, including learning how to use glass cutters and tile nippers and the art of grouting. We will design and make the piece in the morning and grout in the afternoon so you can take your finished house number plaque home with you.

Lino Cutting, Art House SheffieldINTRODUCTION TO LINO PRINTING with Sam Groom

On this lino cut printing workshop you will learn how to transfer your design onto ‘soft-cut’ lino, cut out your design and print using a selection of colourful inks onto paper of various kinds using a small table-top printing press. At the end of the session you will have a range of your own unique prints ready to be framed and hung on your wall!

SCREEN PRINTING WITH EMBROIDERY HOOPS
with Sam Groom

Screen printing does not have to involve lots of technical equipment and expense!  On this workshop you will learn how to screen print using your own homemade embroidery hoop silkscreen. Sam will teach you two different screen printing techniques – screen-printing using a screen block and screen printing using stencils – to produce a range of simple one-colour prints onto paper and fabric.
At the end of the workshop you will have a fabulous range of colourful screen printed designs to take home and frame.

SIP AND PRINT: DAY OF THE DEAD with Mia James

In this class you will create permanent textile prints inspired by the Day of the Dead festival.  Add brightly coloured fabric pieces, sequins and gems to your designs as would be done in Mexico to make them as bright and celebratory as possible!

ABSTRACT PAINTING IN ACRYLICS with Flora Menager

Is abstract painting an abstract concept that you’ve always wanted to learn but didn’t know where to begin? This class will teach you how.
As a starting point we will work from life then progress to working from imagination based on a concept and inspiration images.

Participants will learn painting techniques specifically suited to painting flowers in watercolour.

SIP AND PRINT: VEGETABLES with Mia James 
In this workshop you will be taught how to block print onto fabric using permanent textile inks. Handmade blocks will include a range of fruit and vegetables to print onto either a drawstring or tote bag which can be used as a reusable shopping bag. All materials and a bag will be provided but please bring additional fabric if you wish to create more prints for your home or business.

Suitable for all abilities (even complete beginners!). Bring your own drinks, we’ll provide the glasses! (18+)

Payments: All courses or workshops must be fully paid in advance and all major cheques, cash and credit/debit cards are acceptable methods of payment. To pay by cheque please click here to download a booking form and send back with a cheque made payable to “St Matthews House Ltd”.  You can also drop in Monday – Friday from 11am – 3pm to pay in person.

If you have an Art House gift voucher please follow the instructions below:
• Pay the full price of the course online.
• Email us prior to the course date to tell us you have used a voucher.
• Bring the voucher with you on the day to receive your cash back.

Cancellation and refunds: If you wish to cancel your place on a course you must do so at least 14 days before the course starts in order to receive a full refund. Cancellation must be made in writing or email. If you require a refund we will charge £15 administrative fee. Alternatively you may transfer your booking to another course free of charge.

If you cancel your place less than 14 days before your course starts, you will only receive a refund of 50% course fee (or 50% of the fee value to transfer to an alternative course).  If you require a refund we will charge £15 administrative fee or you can transfer your booking to another course free of charge.

After a course begins we do not offer any refund unless in exceptional circumstances. 

If we have to cancel a course for any reason, then you will receive a full refund with no administrative fee deducted.
