ART SUMMER SCHOOLS (FOR ADULTS)


FIGURATIVE SUMMER SCHOOL with John Kerr
A three day summer school with John that will allow you an opportunity to explore the use of different media (including pencil, charcoal, watercolours, oils and acrylics) and capturing the human form.  Bring your own materials or use what we provide. Suitable for the beginner or more advanced students:

Day 1 – Self-portraiture – Discover the thrill of drawing and painting the one person who has the time and patience to pose for as long as you want them to.  Delve beneath the surface of your skin and find out just who you are.

Day 2 – Draw or paint from a selection of willing sitters. Discover the joy of capturing a likeness using a variety of different media.  A full day in which to create paintings / drawings in this captivating genre.

Day 3 – A full day with a life model. Long enough to finish a painting, help and guidance given from initial drawing to final high lights.

EXPERIMENTAL DRAWING SUMMER SCHOOL with Colette Cameron
Four whole days to immerse yourself in a range of experimental drawing techniques and approaches. The emphasis will be on finding ways to loosen up and try new ideas, which can lead to more time in creative play, which inspires your natural curiosity, and develops new ways to draw.

Materials include charcoal, ink, paint and graphite.
Suitable for anyone who wants to explore and learn including beginners and those with more experience.

SKETCHBOOK SUMMER SCHOOL with Colette Cameron
(Including outdoor sketching in The Botanical Gardens)
Learn the art of keeping a sketchbook and see the world with new eyes during this exciting 4 day summer school. Day 1 included exploring materials and approaches. Days 2 and 3 will be based in the Botanical Gardens with inspiring activities to help you get the most from your sketchbook. Day 4 will be back at the Art House taking the sketches further and exploring ways to progress.

The focus is on creating lively, expressive sketches, exploring different subjects (rather than precise botanical illustrations) from capturing a moment in time to exploring a fascinating detail. Make your sketchbook your own.

Suitable for beginners and the more advanced students.

MOSAICS SUMMER SCHOOL with Diana Storey
Join Mosaic Artist Diana Storey for an uplifting 3-day mosaic summer school/workshop in August to explore your creativity through the art of mosaic.  A selection of bases for mosaic projects in various shapes and sizes will be provided.  A wide variety of colourful mosaic materials will be available

You will learn:

  • Colour combining and design direction
  • Use of mosaic tools including tile nippers and glass cutters
  • Mosaic setting with glass, ceramic, and mirror
  • Grouting with tinted grout.

Each student will work on their own project with one to one guidance, and take home a mosaic masterpiece!

PORTRAITURE:  DRAWING & PAINTING TECHNIQUES with Flora Menager  
Using mixed media (charcoal, pastel, acrylic,) participants will learn experimental portraiture techniques, proportions and tips to better draw and paint people through the practice of self-portraiture.

This course is suitable for absolute beginners.  You will learn:

  • Proportions of the head
  • Using line and value to create form
  • Methods and techniques – learning to see
  • Charcoal, pastel & acrylic painting techniques 

Syllabus: Drawing Techniques (Day 1), Colour Pastel Techniques (Day 2), Acrylic Painting Techniques (Day 3).

ACRYLIC TECHNIQUES FOR BEGINNERS:  PAINTING FROM A PHOTOGRAPH with Flora Menager
Participants will learn acrylic techniques by painting from a photograph of their choosing or from a variety of inspiration images available on the day. This is the perfect opportunity to capture in paint your favourite photograph and learn some the basics of acrylic painting! This class is suitable for all levels, including beginners.

If you would like to paint from your own inspiration image please bring the image with you on the day (the image above is a student’s work from a previous course).  The syllabus:

  • Setting out; Composition and transcribing your image
  • Mapping light and dark values
  • Acrylic characteristics and how to use them
  • Brushwork and blending
  • Colour theory

POTTERY SUMMER SCHOOLS (FOR ADULTS)

THREE DAY POTTERY SUMMER SCHOOL with Charlotte Berry, Mary Else and Mike Scown
Experience a range of pottery skills in this exciting three day pottery course introducing you to the joys of working in clay. The course is suitable for all levels of ability from the complete beginner to the more experienced potter. Run by experienced tutors who will help you succeed with your projects, the course will involve wheel throwing and turning, a variety of hand building techniques and a day of exploring different glaze effects in the raku kiln.

In the three days you will have the opportunity to;
• Wheel throw your personal breakfast set of jug, mug and bowl.
• Hand build items for the garden such as birdbaths, wall planters and sculptural pieces.
• Explore different glazes and see the dramatic effects of the raku kiln.

Raku fired pots can be taken away on the day and your other pieces will be fired and glazed ready for collection in three weeks.

Payments: All courses or workshops must be fully paid in advance and all major cheques, cash and credit/debit cards are acceptable methods of payment. To pay by cheque please click here to download a booking form and send back with a cheque made payable to “St Matthews House Ltd”.  You can also drop in Monday – Friday from 11 am – 3 pm to pay in person.

If you have an Art House gift voucher please follow the instructions below:
• Pay the full price of the course online.
• Email us prior to the course date to tell us you have used a voucher.
• Bring the voucher with you on the day to receive your cash back.

Cancellation and refunds: If you wish to cancel your place on a course you must do so at least 14 days before the course starts in order to receive a full refund. Cancellation must be made in writing or email. If you require a refund we will charge £15 administrative fee. Alternatively you may transfer your booking to another course free of charge.

If you cancel your place less than 14 days before your course starts, you will only receive a refund of 50% course fee (or 50% of the fee value to transfer to an alternative course).  If you require a refund we will charge £15 administrative fee or you can transfer your booking to another course free of charge.

After a course begins we do not offer any refund unless in exceptional circumstances. 

If we have to cancel a course for any reason, then you will receive a full refund with no administrative fee deducted.
