INTRODUCTION TO SPINNING with Dee Sayce

Learn to spin sheep fleece and other fibres to create unique, colourful and textured yarns that can then be used in your own knitting, crochet or craft projects.
In this workshop you will learn the basics of this ancient craft, including how to:
– spin using both a drop spindle and a spinning wheel
– sort a fleece
– card fleece into rolags ready for spinning

This workshop is suitable for beginners.

MOSAICS: HOUSE NUMBERS ON SLATE with Diana Storey

Using a wide range of materials including tiles, glass, mirror, ceramics and jewellery you will create your own house number plaque on a slate base.   You are welcome to bring some of you own bits and pieces if you’d like to incorporate them into your piece.

Along the way you will learn the techniques needed for mosaicking, including learning how to use glass cutters and tile nippers and the art of grouting. We will design and make the piece in the morning and grout in the afternoon so you can take your finished house number plaque home with you.

SIP AND PRINT: DAY OF THE DEAD with Mia James

In this class you will create permanent textile prints inspired by the Day of the Dead festival.  Add brightly coloured fabric pieces, sequins and gems to your designs as would be done in Mexico to make them as bright and celebratory as possible!

Suitable for 18+
Bring your own drinks, we’ll provide the glasses!

ABSTRACT PAINTING IN ACRYLICS with Flora Menager

Is abstract painting an abstract concept that you’ve always wanted to learn but didn’t know where to begin? This class will teach you how.
As a starting point we will work from life then progress to working from imagination based on a concept and inspiration images.

INTRODUCTION TO INTAGLIO AND COLLAGRAPH PRINTING with Vicky Platt

In this workshop we will produce beautiful and unique prints without the complex processes often associated with a printmaking studio. After learning a little about the techniques, we will prepare several “plates” to make stunning images with a portable press. Using backgrounds such as mount card and acrylic sheet we will apply textures with small tools and materials such as sand, glue and paint. In the afternoon we will apply water based ink to the plates and create surprising and lovely embossed prints on watercolour paper.

PROCREATE FOR BEGINNERS with Vicky Platt

Calling iPad users..have you thought about trying digital painting but don’t know where to start? Procreate is a wonderful app designed especially for using on the iPad. In this beginner’s class, you will go step by step through the stages of making successful digital images. We will explore setting up a “canvas”, using brushes, layers and colours, importing and working with photos, along with some special effects. You will have the opportunity to practice your new skills  and create your own original images during the session.

Participants must bring their own iPad and stylus (any type of stylus will do) and have installed the latest version of the Procreate app which is currently £9.99 on the App Store.

INTRODUCTION TO GELLI PRINTING with Vicky Platt

Gelli printing is a very enjoyable, easy and creative method of printmaking. Using stencils, found materials, stamps and small tools; we will create unique patterns on the Gelli plates which we will then transfer to a variety of papers. The colourful and expressive results can be printed over again, drawn into or used for collage to make complex and beautiful images.

LINO CUT BLOCK PRINTING ONTO FABRIC
with Sam Groom

On this creative workshop you will carve a design into into an ‘easy carve’ block using lino cutting tools and then create some simple stamps to compliment your block. You can try a range of colourful fabric printing inks to print your blocks and stamps onto a section of fabric before you produce your design onto either a t-towel or tote bag.

OIL PAINTING FOR BEGINNERS: LANDSCAPES

This workshop offers the chance to learn the fundamentals of landscape painting in oils. You will be shown how to extract and adopt images from photographs to create paintings. You will also learn the fundamentals of composition tone and colour.

INTRODUCTION TO TAPESTRY WEAVING

Learn the craft of tapestry weaving to create your own sampler, wall hanging or small purse/bag. In this workshop you will learn the basics of tapestry weaving including, how to:
· weave using a tapestry frame/loom
·  learn tapestry stitches and techniques
·  use a variety of colours, textures and materials to design your own project

This workshop aims to teach you the basics of weaving in the hope that you will gain the basic knowledge and confidence to continue to weave at home.

THE JOY OF SKETCHING with Tim Bye
Join Tim on this Saturday workshop to spend the day doodling and scribbling your own fun designs. Explore how you like to make marks and develop your “visual voice” in a group atmosphere.

Please bring a few pictures to inspire you: friends / family / people / animals / pets   – anything that makes you want to draw!

Pencils and paper are provided, though feel free to bring any extra materials along (Tim sometimes likes to draw with a ballpoint pen!)

PAINTING BOTANICALS with Flora Menager

SIP AND PRINT: VEGETABLES with Mia James 
In this workshop you will be taught how to block print onto fabric using permanent textile inks. Handmade blocks will include a range of fruit and vegetables to print onto either a drawstring or tote bag which can be used as a reusable shopping bag. All materials and a bag will be provided but please bring additional fabric if you wish to create more prints for your home or business.

Suitable for all abilities (even complete beginners!). Bring your own drinks, we’ll provide the glasses! (18+)

12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS FABRIC PRINTING with Mia James

Create permanent textile prints inspired by the birds from the traditional carol ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’.  Birds will include a partridge, turtle doves, hens, pheasants and geese.  Designs could be used to create your own Christmas cards, gift bags or table linen.  Fabric prints are also great for further embellishment at home, for example embroidery or applique to create unique gifts.  Materials are provided and will include a few card blanks each, one cotton bag and fabric pieces.  If you have project ideas you may wish to bring your own fabric (must be light coloured) to the workshop.

This is a relaxed, therapeutic class where you can create a beautiful Mandala mosaic of your own design, using a wide range of materials including tiles, glass, mirror, ceramics and jewellery.  You are welcome to bring some of you own bits and pieces if you’d like to incorporate them into your Mandala.

You will learn to cut the pieces, arrange and install them and grout, so your piece will be complete and ready to take home.

SOFT CUT LINO PRINTING with Sam Groom 
On this lino cut printing workshop you will learn how to transfer your design onto ‘soft-cut’ lino, cut out your design and print using a selection of colourful inks onto paper of various kinds using a small table-top printing press. At the end of the session you will have a range of your own unique prints ready to be framed and hung on your wall or to make into cards.

Payments: All courses or workshops must be fully paid in advance and all major cheques, cash and credit/debit cards are acceptable methods of payment. To pay by cheque please click here to download a booking form and send back with a cheque made payable to “St Matthews House Ltd”.  You can also drop in Monday – Friday from 11am – 3pm to pay in person.

If you have an Art House gift voucher please follow the instructions below:
• Pay the full price of the course online.
• Email us prior to the course date to tell us you have used a voucher.
• Bring the voucher with you on the day to receive your cash back.

Cancellation and refunds: If you wish to cancel your place on a course you must do so at least 14 days before the course starts in order to receive a full refund. Cancellation must be made in writing or email. If you require a refund we will charge £15 administrative fee. Alternatively you may transfer your booking to another course free of charge.

If you cancel your place less than 14 days before your course starts, you will only receive a refund of 50% course fee (or 50% of the fee value to transfer to an alternative course).  If you require a refund we will charge £15 administrative fee or you can transfer your booking to another course free of charge.

After a course begins we do not offer any refund unless in exceptional circumstances. 

If we have to cancel a course for any reason, then you will receive a full refund with no administrative fee deducted.
