WEDNESDAY ART CLUB with Flora Menager
Art Club is a great opportunity to develop your artistry in a social, inclusive and relaxed environment. The sessions provide the perfect balance between taught learning and freedom to develop skills in any medium of your choice with guidance and support from Flora.  A variety of drawing and painting materials will be available for use including: watercolour, gouache, pen and pencils, charcoal, pastels, acrylic, oils, inks.

Suitable for all levels of ability and experience from beginners.

EVENING LIFE DRAWING with Mark Beachell
Our life drawing class gives participants an ideal opportunity to practice drawing from a model in a friendly an supportive environment. Paper and basic materials are provided.  Suitable for all abilities.

SIP AND STITCH with Em Smith/The Creative Art Cart
Come along to Sip and Stich and make your own gorgeous little felt mice. In this workshop you will be using sheet felt, fabric, ribbon,embellishments to create one or two mice. All materials and equipment are provided. Gift bags, tags and ribbon will be provided so they can be given as gifts.. or kept for yourself!

This is a step by step class for all abilities (even complete beginners!). Bring your own drinks and we’ll provide the glasses! (18+)

MOSAICS FOR THE GARDEN with Diana Storey 
Students will learn a different mosaicing technique which involves putting glass, ceramics and found objects into cement. This cement can be coloured with students choice and formed into any shape they wish. Students will learn how to use tile and glass cutters and will leave a mosaic piece to dry which can be picked up the week after. The finished pieces are applicable for outside use. This is a fun fast way of mosaicing without the need for grouting.

SIP AND FIMO: FLOWER AND LEAF BUTTONS with Gill Cosford
Come along and create these cute polymer clay flower and leaf buttons. These buttons are suitable for clothing that is washed at 40 °c or or can be used for any soft furnishing project, knitted jumpers or adding onto any other crafty designs that may need a decorative touch. In this workshop you will be using polymer clay, which is a highly coloured oven-hardening plastic clay. This will be a step by step workshop. You will be able to choose your own colours too.

You will be taking your buttons home to bake them. Full instructions will be given out as well as an instruction leaflet. You will need to bring a baking tray to carry your creations home.

Suitable for all abilities (even complete beginners!). Bring your own drinks, we’ll provide the glasses! (18+)

IMPRESSIONISM AND MIXING COLOUR with Flora Menager 
Through the practice of painting a still life participants will learn painting techniques used by impressionist painters and how to mix colour in order to depict the fleeting nature of light. This class is a great starting point for anyone new to painting or that would like to learn colour theory and mixing techniques.
This workshop will cover;
– Setting out; preparing your surface, choosing a composition
– Mapping, light and dark values
– Mark making
– Colour theory
– Techniques for painting with acrylics

BEGINNERS ACRYLIC TECHNIQUES: PAINTING FROM A PHOTOGRAPH with Flora Menager
In this two day workshop, participants will learn acrylic techniques by painting from a photograph of their choosing or from a variety of inspiration images available on the day. This is the perfect opportunity to capture in paint your favourite photograph and learn some the basics of acrylic painting! This class is suitable for all levels, including beginners. SIP AND PRINT: HEART PICTURE with Sonia Santos
An Introduction to Arraiolos (are-rye-oh-loosh)
Arraiolos is a traditional tapestry wool made in the small town of Arraiolos, Portugal since the middle ages.

For this fun, 2 hour introduction you will be learning ‘long arm stitch tapestry’, working on a small heart frame with colours of your choice.  Bring your own wine, we’ll provide the glasses!

IMPRESSIONISM & MIXING COLOUR with Flora Menager
In this 2 day course you will learn painting techniques used by impressionist painters and gain understanding on how to mix colour.

In this workshop you will be taught how to block print onto fabric using permanent textile inks. Handmade blocks will include a range of fruit and vegetables to print onto either a drawstring or tote bag which can be used as a reusable shopping bag.All materials and a bag will be provided but please bring additional fabric if you wish to create more prints for your home or business.

DRAWING WILDLIFE UP CLOSE with Carl Flint
An opportunity for observational drawing in the studio. We will be working from stuffed animals on loan from Museums Sheffield.  This is the perfect opportunity to get up close & personal to your subject!

You will be encouraged to make multiple studies and sketches from various angles in artistic media of your choice. Sketchbook work will be encouraged.

SIP AND FIMO: SCREEN PRINTED FIMO JEWELLERY with Gill Cosford 
Come along to this Sip and Fimo class and create this gorgeous pendant and ear rings set. Suitable for all abilities (even complete beginners!).

In this workshop you will be using polymer clay, (which is a highly coloured oven-hardening clay) which will be screen printed with a variety of designs, it will then be cured in the oven.This will be a step by step workshop, so it is perfect for beginners.
You should be wearing your jewellery at the end of the session and also have some extras to finish off at home. Full baking instructions will be given out as well as an instruction leaflet.

Bring your own drinks, we’ll provide the glasses! (18+)

INDIGO TYE DYEING with Dee Sayce
Learn to tie and dye fabric with a natural plant based indigo blue dye. We will make tie dyed fabric samples with interesting patterns in the fabric with a range of techniques including stitching, folding and tying with threads, rubber bands, and clips. Indigo dye is light fast and wash fast, which is why it has historically been very popular. Take home your samples to use in craft projects.

This course is suitable for beginners.  All materials and equipment are provided.

COSPLAY SKETCH! with Carl Flint
This class is aimed at age 14 – adult. 

Ideal for fans of comics, Manga & anime!  An unusual life drawing session with the opportunity to draw a cosplayer in a fantastic costume, with props and weapons, in a range of poses. A one-off class for all abilities (some drawing experience would be an advantage but is not essential). Sitter TBC.

During the class we will consider:

  • Proportions
  • Roughs
  • The figure in motion
  • Dramatic lighting

Students are welcome to bring their own equipment, basic materials will be provided.

CARICATURE FROM LIFE with Carl Flint
Enjoy the experience of sketching, exaggerating and graphically poking fun at an open-minded, non-judgemental sitter. We will examine basic drawing techniques, proportions, and mark-making. We will also ask how to add extra creativity and comment to the artwork.

Free sketchbook included.  You may choose to bring an ipad, phone or camera but this is not essential. Suitable for all abilities

PAINTING BOTANICALS with Flora Menager
In celebration of spring, participants will learn painting techniques specifically suited to painting flowers in watercolour and gouache.

This class is suitable for both beginners and students who have previously taken a watercolour course and/or are looking to try new techniques.  We will be painting from beautiful inspiration images but feel free to bring in your own on the day!

PRINTMAKING: LEAVES with Mia James
In this workshop, we will experiment with printmaking onto paper and fabric using leaves and leaf motif printing blocks. We will start by printing with real leaves onto paper, then experiment with block printing onto fabrics (cotton, voile etc) using permanent textile inks, then make our own leaf printing blocks. After playing with a range of techniques and materials participants can then block print a larger design using their leaf blocks and a selection of my bird or squirrel blocks to create a unique artwork inspired by life in a tree.

BAND WEAVING with Dee Sayce
Learn how to make strong, decorative woven bands, using an inkle loom. Band weaving is a traditional method of weaving to make long woven bands for belts, bag straps and edging etc. In this workshop you will learn the basics of band weaving, make woven samples using a variety of patterns, techniques, colours and yarn. This workshop aims to give you the confidence and skills needed to set up and weave on an inkle loom independently at home.

WATERCOLOUR SKIES with Flora Menager

Skies are key to any landscape painting and help set the mood through lighting and colour. During this two-session course, you will paint from beautiful inspiration images and gain the skills and techniques needed to venture into the open air and capture the sky with confidence. In this relaxed, creative workshop you will make a bracelet using jump rings, chain, clasps and assorted beads which will be ready to wear at the end of the session.  There will be opportunity to explore silver elastic, natural fibre or leather bracelets.

Payments: All courses or workshops must be fully paid in advance and all major cheques, cash and credit/debit cards are acceptable methods of payment. To pay by cheque please click here to download a booking form and send back with a cheque made payable to “St Matthews House Ltd”.  You can also drop in Monday – Friday from 11am – 3pm to pay in person.

If you have an Art House gift voucher please follow the instructions below:
• Pay the full price of the course online.
• Email us prior to the course date to tell us you have used a voucher.
• Bring the voucher with you on the day to receive your cash back.

Cancellation and refunds: If you wish to cancel your place on a course you must do so at least 14 days before the course starts in order to receive a full refund. Cancellation must be made in writing or email. If you require a refund we will charge £15 administrative fee. Alternatively you may transfer your booking to another course free of charge.

If you cancel your place less than 14 days before your course starts, you will only receive a refund of 50% course fee (or 50% of the fee value to transfer to an alternative course).  If you require a refund we will charge £15 administrative fee or you can transfer your booking to another course free of charge.

After a course begins we do not offer any refund unless in exceptional circumstances. 

If we have to cancel a course for any reason, then you will receive a full refund with no administrative fee deducted.
