LIFE DRAWING with Flora Menager
Flora’s life drawing classes aim to help beginner and intermediate participants build confidence by providing tips and techniques to help represent the figure on paper.

The course can be booked for the full 4 weeks or individual sessions.

DRAWING WILDLIFE UP CLOSE with Carl Flint
An opportunity for observational drawing in the studio. We will be working from stuffed animals on loan from Museums Sheffield.  This is the perfect opportunity to get up close & personal to your subject!

 

You will be encouraged to make multiple studies and sketches from various angles in artistic media of your choice. Sketchbook work will be encouraged.

All materials provided – including a free sketch book.

PRINTMAKING: LEAVES with Mia James
In this workshop, we will experiment with printmaking onto paper and fabric using leaves and leaf motif printing blocks. We will start by printing with real leaves onto paper, then experiment with block printing onto fabrics (cotton, voile etc) using permanent textile inks, then make our own leaf printing blocks. After playing with a range of techniques and materials participants can then block print a larger design using their leaf blocks and a selection of my bird or squirrel blocks to create a unique artwork inspired by life in a tree.

NATURAL DYEING WORKSHOP with Dee Sayce

Learn how to use tried and tested techniques to dye fabric and yarn using natural dyes, e.g. berries, leaves, flowers, roots, tree barks and kitchen waste. During the dyeing process we will make use of mordants to extend the variety of colours.  The dyes will be used to produce samples of which you can take home. Bring small amounts of your own yarn or fabric which you can add to the dye pots, (optional). Learn the basics of natural dyeing and go home with the knowledge and confidence to make your own dyes to use in the future.

This workshop is suitable for beginners, all materials and equipment supplied.

OIL PAINTING FOR BEGINNERS with Marcin Szuba
This workshop will start with practical advice such as setting out your palette and mix colours. A still life will be set up before the workshop and the tutor will be coming around to each person helping to overcome the challenges that arise. Participants will make two sketches as warm-ups then use these to inspire your painting. We will focus on composition, form, tone and colour relationships.

OIL PAINTING FOR BEGINNERS: STILL LIFE with Marcin Szuba
This workshop is for students with less confidence and previous experience with painting. You will learn the fundamentals of handling paint and composition and you will observe tonal values and colour relationships. You will explore different surfaces, lines, pattern and space. We will work from a simple still life set-up. These session will be taught largely on one to one basis to help you build confidence.

All materials are provided. Please bring old clothes to paint in.

This workshop offers the chance to learn the fundamentals of landscape Painting in oils. You will be shown how to extract and adopt images from photographs to create paintings. You will also learn the fundamentals of composition tone and colour.

FABRIC PRINTING: LIFE IN AN OAK TREE with Mia James
At this workshop we will block print onto fabric using handmade printing blocks inspired by life in an oak tree.  We will start by printing using a range of oak leaf blocks and experiment with colour and layering and creating repeat patterns.  Then we will work on a larger piece and using masking and layering create a illustrative print using my blocks which include a tawny owl, a jay, a squirrel and a stag beetle!  Materials are provided but you may wish to bring your own fabric (must be light coloured) if you have a particular project in mind, for example, cushion covers, lampshade, curtains, t-shirts.

This workshop is suitable for age 13 years to adults.  (Under 18s must be accompanied by a participating adult).

MOSAICS FOR THE GARDEN with Diana Storey
Students will learn a mosaicing technique which involves putting glass, ceramics and found objects into cement. This cement can be coloured with students choice and formed into any shape they wish. Students will learn how to use tile and glass cutters and will leave a mosaic piece to dry which can be picked up the week later. The finished pieces are suitable for outside use. This is a fun fast way of mosaicing without the need for grouting.

SIP AND FIMO: Bulls Eye Cane Plant Pot with Gill Cosford
In this workshop you will learn how to make a bullseye ‘cane’ design (like a stick of sea side rock!) to decorate the edge of a plant pot and also make some flower stakes to add colour to your garden..inside or out. The items will go back with the artist to be baked in her studio then they can be collected at a later date from the art house. You can choose your colours.

Suitable for all abilities (even complete beginners!). Bring your own wine, we’ll provide the glasses! (18+)

INTRODUCTION TO TAPESTRY with Dee Sayce
Learn the craft of tapestry weaving to create your own sampler, wall hanging or small purse/bag. In this workshop you will learn the basics of tapestry weaving including, how to:

  • weave using a tapestry frame/loom
  • learn tapestry stitches and techniques
  • use a variety of colours, textures and materials to design your own project.

This workshop aims to teach you the basics of weaving in the hope that you will gain the basic knowledge and confidence to continue to weave at home.  This workshop is suitable for beginners, all materials and equipment are provided

PAINTING BOTANICALS with Flora Menager
In celebration of summer, participants will learn painting techniques specifically suited to painting flowers in watercolour and gouache.

SIP AND FIMO:  HOUSE NUMBERS with Gill Cosford
Why not come along to this Sip and Fimo class and learn how to make this colourful house number plaque for your home. It is created with polymer clay which is a highly coloured, oven hardening clay.

  • Choose the colours you prefer.
  • You could have your family name instead of house number, or you could just do a floral design!
  • The plaque is for the outside of your home and will be backed onto a piece of plywood.
  • The design is primarily floral… you will have a choice of cutters and shapes to use. If you prefer your own design that’s good too.
  • Once it is made it will be taken back to the artists studio to finish off. You will then collect it from the Art House.

Suitable for all abilities (even complete beginners!). Bring your own wine, we’ll provide the glasses! (18+)

COMING SOON – INTRODUCTION TO THE ART OF GREENWALLS with Richard Nicolle
For beginners who want to get creative with Living Walls where Art meets Gardens and Gardens meet Art.  In an era where urban space is becoming ever more precious and the clamour for greening up, healing up, and cleaning up our environment grows ever louder, here is a chance to explore the potential for this as a new art form and create your own designed Living Wall!

This workshop will illustrate what creative architects and designers are doing around the world and introduce some basic husbandry for creative gardening. Then you get to design and make your own green wall cassette to take home. Materials and plants supplied.

Payments: All courses or workshops must be fully paid in advance and all major cheques, cash and credit/debit cards are acceptable methods of payment. To pay by cheque please click here to download a booking form and send back with a cheque made payable to “St Matthews House Ltd”.  You can also drop in Monday – Friday from 11am – 3pm to pay in person.

If you have an Art House gift voucher please follow the instructions below:
• Pay the full price of the course online.
• Email us prior to the course date to tell us you have used a voucher.
• Bring the voucher with you on the day to receive your cash back.

Cancellation and refunds: If you wish to cancel your place on a course you must do so at least 14 days before the course starts in order to receive a full refund. Cancellation must be made in writing or email. If you require a refund we will charge £15 administrative fee. Alternatively you may transfer your booking to another course free of charge.

If you cancel your place less than 14 days before your course starts, you will only receive a refund of 50% course fee (or 50% of the fee value to transfer to an alternative course).  If you require a refund we will charge £15 administrative fee or you can transfer your booking to another course free of charge.

After a course begins we do not offer any refund unless in exceptional circumstances. 

If we have to cancel a course for any reason, then you will receive a full refund with no administrative fee deducted.
