Family workshops & activities

Join us for family friendly creative sessions at the Art House, where your child can enjoy hands-on making activities during the school holidays.

Please note:  children under 8 must be accompanied in the studio/classroom for the activity (if you want to be involved in the making with your child(ren) then please book yourself a place).  For children over 8 – you are welcome to leave them under supervision of the tutor running the activity but must remain in the Art House (don’t worry we have an excellent cafe with free WiFi!). Young people under 18 years can only be left unsupervised at the Art House with prior agreement.

FIMO HALLOWEEN DECORATIONS with Gill Cosford
Come along to this two hour workshop and learn how to make these scary Halloween decorations that you can hang in your window to spook the Trick or Treaters!

FABRIC PRINTING: BATS with Mia James
In this workshop you will be taught to create permanent textile prints using motifs inspired by late autumn and winter trees; misty morning skies with crows, ravens, rooks and dusk with flitting bats.
You will use handmade printing blocks, experiment with fabric paints to create background colour washes and create atmospheric designs to have in your home.
Suitable for children aged 8+

FABRIC PRINTING: DIA DE LOS MUERTOS (DAY OF THE DEAD) with Mia James
In this workshop Mia will teach you how to create permanent textile prints inspired by the Mexican Day of The Dead festival. You will add brightly coloured fabric pieces, sequins and gems to your designs as would be done in Mexico, to make them as bright and as celebratory as possible!
Suitable for children aged 8+

GINGERBREAD HOUSES with Angie Hardwick
Make a beautiful ceramic gingerbread house under the expert tuition of Angie Hardwick.  In this 2 hour workshop you will learn imprinting and applying techniques to create decoration and slab building skills to construct your gingerbread house.

Your work will be left for firing – after which time you can decorate your work with acrylic paints and varnish at home (you will be given guidance on decorating your work).

MAKING AND DECORATING A CUP with Helen Pollitt
Making and decorating slab cups with handles.  Helen will teach how to roll out a slab and form it into a cup.  You will be shown how to decorate the cup with imprints and/or stamps and also taught how to make a handle for your cup.  Suitable for ages 5 years and up.  Children under the age of 8 years must be accompanied by an adult.  There will be an extra £1 charge on the day to have your pot kiln fired – otherwise you can take it away wet and decorate at home.

(Please note if the cups are to be used for holding any liquid then they should be fired).

MAKING AND DECORATING LIDDED PINCH POTS with Helen Pollitt
Making and decorating pinch pots.  Helen will teach you a specific technique in how to make a clay pinch pot with a lid.
You will also be shown decorative techniques such as carving and imprinting.
Suitable for ages 5 years and up.  Children under the age of 8 years must be accompanied by an adult. There will be an extra £1 charge on the day to have your pot kiln fired. Otherwise you can take it away wet and decorate at home.

Payments: All courses or workshops must be fully paid in advance and all major cheques, cash and credit/debit cards are acceptable methods of payment.

Payment by cheque: To pay by cheque please click here to download a booking form and send back with a cheque made payable to “St Matthews House Ltd”. You can also drop in Monday-Friday from 11am-3pm to pay in person.

Cancellation and refunds: If you wish to cancel your place on a course you must do so at least 14 days before the course starts in order to receive a full refund. Cancellation must be made in writing or email. If you require a refund we will charge £15 administrative fee. Alternatively you may transfer your booking to another course free of charge.

If you cancel your place within 14 days of commencement you will only receive a refund of 50% course fee.

If we are forced to cancel a course then you will receive a full refund with no administrative fee deducted.
