Summer Term

BATIK with Joanna Mathewson
Would you like to learn how to create a Batik textile?  Come along to these sessions every second Friday to play with colour and fabric, making marks, patterns and designs using the ancient textile art of Batik. Apply hot wax onto cotton fabric with a “tjanting” or brush then add a rainbow of colour with cold water fibre reactive dyes. These classes are designed for absolute beginners and those with some experience.

lucy's balloon sam linoPRINTING WORKSHOPS – INTRODUCTION TO SOFT CUT LINO PRINTING with Sam Groom
On this workshop for complete beginners, you will learn how to transfer and cut out your design using ‘soft cut’ lino.  You will then learn how to mix up colourful inks and use a press to produce a series of unique lino cut prints to take home and frame.

Learn some simple creative printmaking techniques for producing unique hand printed textiles.  Using hand-made printmaking blocks and other easy and effective printmaking techniques, you will first print a series of experimental fabric swatches before using a combination of the techniques you have learned to decorate your own unique cushion cover.

LIFE DRAWING DAY with Flora Menager
Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with drawing techniques related to the figure.  Whether you have never tried drawing the figure before and you would like to have a go or would like to refresh your skills this class is open to all levels, beginner to advanced levels.  The course will cover:

  • Setting out techniques and composition
  • Charcoal techniques
  • Exploring quality of line and mark making
  • Lights and darks – creating 3-dimensional value

In this light-hearted 2 part class, you will work with artist Danielle Thompson exploring how to draw flowers and leaves as illustration for a quote or phrase of your choosing.

Week 1 – will focus on drawing techniques using real flowers, you will also experiment with watercolour to write your quote and plan your final piece.
Week 2 – will be spent illustrating your quote with support and advice from Danielle as you go along.

These sessions are suitable for beginners and those who’ve had a little more practise.

ABSTRACT ART AND MINDFULNESS ~ with Sarah Falkenberg Hassan
In this workshop Sarah will encourage you to explore art making and mindfulness techniques through a combination of: tutor-led discussion on abstract techniques and mindfulness, explorative art making sessions experimenting with different mediums (sand, acrylic, collage, inks) and then finally students will use the afternoon to work on a final canvas piece which they will take home.

Sarah’s work’s can be seen in hostels as well as yoga retreats throughout China and she has travelled extensively, painting murals in countries including Panama, Colombia, Mexico and the Galapagos islands.

lampshade 4PRINTING WORKSHOPS – HAND PRINTED LAMPSHADES with Sam Groom
Impress your friends with your gorgeous, one off hand printed lampshade!  On this workshop you will hand print a length of fabric using simple printing methods. You will then use this fabric to create your own unique lampshade. As well as learning some techniques for fabric printing you will also learn how to create a drum lampshade which can have either a lamp or ceiling fitting.

PRINTING WORKSHOPS – SCREEN PRINTING WITH EMBROIDERY HOOPS with Sam Groom
Screen printing does not have to involve lots of technical equipment and expense!  On this workshop you will learn how to screen print using your own homemade embroidery hoop silkscreen. Sam will teach you two different screen printing techniques – screen-printing using a screen block and screen printing using stencils – to produce a range of simple one-colour prints onto paper and fabric.

At the end of the workshop you will have a fabulous range of colourful screen printed designs to take home and frame.

Autumn term (September 2017 onwards)

Marcin2INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP TO OIL PAINTING – with Marcin Szuba
This is a one off workshop, suitable for beginners and improvers, is based around a still life subject and encourages observation of line, shape and colour.

We will be looking at the work of painters including Eduard Vuillard, Henri Matisse, and Beatriz Milhazes. You will be given lots of one to one guidance from Marcin to create your own interpretation of the subject.

All materials are provided.  Please bring old clothes to paint in.

LIFE DRAWING DAY with Catherine Hutchinson
The workshop comprises shorter warm-up poses, followed by one long pose which will enable you to produce a considered drawing or painting.  Basic skills covered e.g. measuring and proportion, tone, composition etc.  Catherine will provide significant input to ensure you find the day both rewarding and enjoyable!

Payments: All courses or workshops must be fully paid in advance and all major cheques, cash and credit/debit cards are acceptable methods of payment. To pay by cheque please click here to download a booking form and send back with a cheque made payable to “St Matthews House Ltd”.  You can also drop in Monday – Friday from 11am – 3pm to pay in person.

If you have an Art House gift voucher please follow the instructions below:
• Pay the full price of the course online.
• Email us prior to the course date to tell us you have used a voucher.
• Bring the voucher with you on the day to receive your cash back.

Cancellation and refunds: If you wish to cancel your place on a course or workshop you must do so at least 14 days before the course or workshop starts in order to receive a full refund. Cancellation must be made in writing or email. If you require a refund we will charge £15 administrative fee.  Alternatively you may transfer your booking to another course free of charge.

If you cancel your place within 14 days of commencement of the course or workshop you will only receive a refund of 50% course fee (or 50% of the fee value to transfer to an alternative course).  If we are forced to cancel a course then you will receive a full refund with no administrative fee deducted.
