On this course you will learn about block printing onto fabric to create permanent textile designs.
The theme for our designs will be allotments and we will create imagery and patterns inspired by fruits, vegetables and the rich colours of harvest.
Materials are provided but you may wish to bring your own light coloured fabrics.

This fun 6-week introductory watercolour course is suitable for anyone looking to take their first steps in painting. No need to have picked up a brush before! Participants will have the opportunity to experiment in this step by step course covering:


  • Setting out
  • Composition
  • Colour theory
  • Colour washes
  • Textures

Bear Study

A new course for all levels and abilities – for beginners to those who have a passion for drawing!  Tim will provide encouragement and advice to guide you through a range of studies and themes over the weeks.  The course is repeatable and as your skill and confidence increases you will be able to develop a significant portfolio of work.

Themes will include:  drawing from photographs, life drawing using a clothed life model, drawing from nature, architecture, imagination, sculpture, technology (man made objects) etc.

HOW TO PAINT With Mark Beachell
An exciting new course which which will give you new ways of making art.  Mark will lead you through the techniques from artists such as Turner, David Hockney, the Impressionists and others.


Using mediums including acrylics, pastel, gouache, watercolour and tempera you will be shown how the masters worked and how to interpret these techniques into a style all of your own.  All materials are supplied and you will be given stage by stage painting instruction each session.  This course is repeatable as each term will cover different artists, subject matter and media.

“Mark is very informative on both a “how to” level and an “art history” level. The sessions were very productive and I hope they’ll be a springboard to doing more stuff at home.”

Join us for this 6-week course covering the most basic element of any artwork, drawing techniques.  We will use our environment to discover the many tips and tricks you can use to develop a unique and accomplished drawing style.


Participants will learn drawing techniques to better describe the world around them through a variety of media; charcoal, pencil, pastel, coloured pencil etc.  The course will cover:

  • Setting out techniques and composition
  • Exploring quality of line and mark making
  • Perspective
  • Adding value; lights and darks
  • Using colour

Our life drawing class gives participants an ideal opportunity to practice drawing from a model in a friendly an supportive environment.

still life

OIL PAINTING with Marcin Szuba
Suitable for both complete beginners to oil painting and those who attended 3-week taster course in August.

Working from still life set-ups you will make two sketches as warm ups then use these to inspire your first painting. Beginners will be guided through line, composition and colour, whilst more experienced students will start with line and composition before focusing on pattern.

You will receive plenty of one-to-one input from Marcin as well as looking at the work of historical and contemporary painters.

All materials are provided. Please bring old clothes to paint in.

John KerrTHE ART OF WATERCOLOUR with John Kerr
A course for all abilities, for the beginner or those with some experience who are looking to develop their skills and technique further.

Over the course John will introduce you to the fascinating world of watercolours, including: an introduction to the materials, techniques, colour, drawing and perspective, whilst each week there will be range of  different subject matter including still life and landscape.

For those who wish to proceed further into the challenging art of watercolour painting.  This ongoing course will allow you to develop your own style and concentrate on the subject matter of your choice.

Guidance and tuition tailored to suit your needs will expand your artistic abilities and allow you to create a body of work that will increase your knowledge of this media.  We will be looking at:

  • Drawing skills, composition and perspective.
  • How to develop your techniques.
  • How to draw, design and compose great pictures.
  • Assembling images and identify your own potential subject matter.
  • How to develop your own style and gain confidence in painting.


interior design mark bTHE ART OF INTERIOR DESIGN With Mark Beachell
This course is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills to approach any interior design project with confidence.

Most sessions will start with a short talk followed by a practical session where you will put theory into practice. In short, this course will teach you to be an interior designer.

You will understand approaches to design including a knowledge of

  • Period styles and how and when to use them
  • How to make colour work in any situation
  • How to make the most of a space
  • How to get your designs across to others

6.30 – 8.30pm

This course is for complete beginners and those who feel unconfident in their drawing skills. We will start with the very basics and work step by step to gradually build up skills using a variety of media and techniques, including

  • Techniques to see and draw accurately
  • Rules of perspective
  • Expressive mark making
  • Use of tone to convey light and form
  • Techniques in pencil, ink and charcoal

This introduction to watercolours is suitable for complete beginners and those who would like to learn from scratch. We will start with basic techniques in the form of sample sheets and move on to creating several step by step pieces including a watercolour landscape.

Do you have a photograph that you absolutely adore and have always wanted to transform into a beautiful painting?

In this class, we will learn a variety of acrylic painting techniques and you will be guided through the process of creating a new

piece of art from your photo. It’s completely up to you the photo you choose and the class is designed so that anyone, no matter how novice or advanced, can come away with something to treasure.

The course will include:

  • Setting out; Preparing your surface, choosing a composition, transcribing your image
  • Mapping light and dark values
  • Mark making
  • Colour theory

*Students are only asked to bring their favourite photograph to the class to paint from, all other materials are provided.

– Using colour



18th, 25th November and 2nd December 2017 (3 week course)

botanicals floraPAINTING BOTANICALS ~ with Flora Menager
Participants will learn painting techniques specifically suited to painting flowers and gourds in gouache.

Suitable for both beginner students and students who have previously taken Flora’s water colour courses and/or are looking to try gouache.

18th, 25th November and 2nd December 2017 (3 week course)

Beginners Lino Cutting, Art House Sheffield

In this course you will design your own picture, learn how to use the tools and techniques to carve making line and texture marks onto your piece of lino to form a raised printing surface.

You will learn techniques to hand burnish and hand print your image.  It is helpful to bring ideas and images: a photograph, drawing, picture from magazine or book, or even small objects to draw inspiration from.

Over the course short demonstrations will be given. The emphasis is on learning basic techniques and creative self-discovery.  You will go home with your prints and lino printing plates. Click on the “BOOK HERE” link for further information.

Payments: All courses or workshops must be fully paid in advance and all major cheques, cash and credit/debit cards are acceptable methods of payment. To pay by cheque please click here to download a booking form and send back with a cheque made payable to “St Matthews House Ltd”.  You can also drop in Monday – Friday from 11am – 3pm to pay in person.

• Email us prior to the course date to tell us you have used a voucher.
• Bring the voucher with you on the day to receive your cash back.

Cancellation and refunds: If you wish to cancel your place on a course you must do so at least 14 days before the course starts in order to receive a full refund. Cancellation must be made in writing or email. If you require a refund we will charge £15 administrative fee.  Alternatively you may transfer your booking to another course free of charge.

If you cancel your place within 14 days of commencement of the course you will only receive a refund of 50% course fee (or 50% of the fee value to transfer to an alternative course).  If we are forced to cancel a course then you will receive a full refund with no administrative fee deducted.
