In this course participants will create unique illustrations to fulfil a live brief.  The relaxed and informal sessions will take you all the way from initial rough to delivering the final artwork.

This fun, 6 week, introductory watercolour course is suitable for anyone looking to take their first steps in painting. No need to have picked up a brush before! Participants will have the opportunity to experiment in this step by step course.

Each session will focus on the methods and style of a particular artist so that you can experience a particular way of working. For example we might look at the techniques of Turner or David Hockney and be guided through the stages of making a painting inspired by their work.

Guidance and tuition tailored to suit your needs will expand your artistic abilities and allow you to create a body of work that will increase your knowledge of this media.

We will be looking at:
• Drawing skills, composition and perspective.
• How to develop your techniques.

batik-joanna-mathewsonBATIK ART FOR BEGINNERS with Joanna Mathewson

Would you like to learn how to create a Batik textile?

Come along to these sessions every second Friday to play with colour and fabric, making marks, patterns and designs using the ancient textile art of Batik. Apply hot wax onto cotton fabric with a “tjanting” or brush then add a rainbow of colour with cold water fibre reactive dyes. These classes are designed for absolute beginners and those with some experience.

This course will equip you with the core knowledge and skills to undertake interior design projects either for yourself or a client. A design based course (rather than decorating) allowing you to refine your skills and think creatively about a space, you will learn how to approach projects like a designer and visualise your thinking through plans and mood boards.

PRINT! 
‘PRINT!’ takes in different types of printing processes from lino cutting to screen printing.  Tutors include the talented Marie-Louise Maxey and Sam Groom.  Please click on the ‘BOOK HERE’ links for more information on the individual courses.

Beginners Lino Cutting, Art House SheffieldPRINT! LINO

In this three week course you will design your own picture, learn how to use the tools and techniques to carve making line and texture marks onto your piece of lino to form a raised printing surface. You will learn techniques to hand burnish and hand print your image.  It is helpful to bring ideas and images: a photograph, drawing, picture from magazine or book, or even small objects to draw inspiration from.

Over the course short demonstrations will be given and projects will develop according to each individual at the pace that is right for them. The emphasis is on learning basic techniques and creative self-discovery.  Click on the “BOOK HERE” link for further information.

Summer schools

SUMMER ART SCHOOL: EXPRESSIVE COLOUR AND LINE With Anna Massey

Immerse yourself in a creative journey as we spend four days exploring line, colour and expression.  Taking inspiration from the world around us – objects, landscape and humans – students will aim to build up a body of figurative and semi abstract pieces exploring what it means to add your own handwriting and expression to your work.

SUMMER ART SCHOOL: DRAWING With Catherine Hutchinson

This Summer School is suitable for both beginners and those with more experience who want to practice and develop their drawing skills.  During the 4 days, core drawing skills will be covered as well as some more experimental drawing techniques.

You will be encouraged to develop your own individual approach to drawing while learning/improving your technical skills.  Subject matter will include still life, drawing ‘on location’ (the Winter Gardens) and on one of the days, drawing the human figure.  A variety of media will be explored.

Payments: All courses or workshops must be fully paid in advance and all major Cheques, Cash and Credit/Debit cards are acceptable methods of payment.

Cheques:  To pay by cheque please click here to download a booking form and send back with a cheque made payable to “St Matthews House Ltd”.  You can also drop in Monday-Friday from 11am – 3pm to pay in person.

Cancellation and refunds: If you wish to cancel your place on a course you must do so at least 14 days before the course starts in order to receive a full refund. Cancellation must be made in writing or email. If you require a refund we will charge £15 administrative fee. Alternatively you may transfer your booking to another course free of charge.

If you cancel your place within 14 days of commencement you will only receive a refund of 50% course fee.

If we are forced to cancel a course then you will receive a full refund with no administrative fee deducted.
